DOOM, Animal Crossing, Final Fantasy, the Last of Us, Spider-Man, Assassin’s Creed, Paper Mario, Streets of Rage, Resident Evil. On paper, 2020 looks spectacular with the return of some of the key sagas in this sector, but how is the year being at a quality level? Is it meeting expectations? We will tell you.

The 10 best games of 2020 (to date)

These are the best PS4 games to date

How is the race for the best game of the year 2020 going so far? The truth is that, despite all the complications that are raining us this year, 2020 is being a quite remarkable year. It is noted that the generation is concluding, as large studios such as Naughty Dog or CD Project RED take advantage of the moment so that their most ambitious releases reach as many players as possible.

In this personal and non-transferable list, we are going to tell you our opinion about the highlights of the year. We will update it month by month with the release of the most anticipated releases.

10. Nioh 2

Released:  March 13, 2020

Team Ninja surprised us all in 2017 with one of the most amazing role-playing and action games of this generation. More than a decade passed before the Japanese studio managed to carry out the development and it did so with a spectacular result. The follow-up we received in 2020 takes us several decades before the events of the first installment. Nioh 2 manages to polish the already brilliant souls-like formula of the original game, but it is quite conservative, it practically does not risk and that ends up passing some bill, to such an extent that it seems more like an expansion than a sequel to use.

9. Resident Evil 3 Remake

Released:  April 3, 2020

Review Resident Evil 3 Remake

Resident Evil 3 Remake has a problem, and it’s called Resident Evil 2 Remake. The expected development of the classic PSX has not lived up to the previous installment, undoubtedly one of the best games of the generation. However Resident Evil 3 is still quite a remarkable game, packed with action, show and memorable tense moments. Equalizing the level of its predecessor was difficult and the lack of content doesn’t help it, but it’s still a great way to rediscover the original game in 2020.

8. Streets of Rage 4

Released: April 30, 2020

Although at the production level it is in another category than other members of this list, Streets of Rage 4 is a real game that deserves to be included. It is a gem within the beat’em up genre that those who grew up in the 90s between arcades or with a Mega Drive in their hands will appreciate, but that is playable and visually capable of surprising any player and giving them hours of fun by spreading bullets.

7. Persona 5 Royal

Released: March 31, 2020

Analysis Persona 5 Royal

Persona 5 is a treasure, one of the best JRPGs of the decade, with more than 100 hours of content, unforgettable characters, a unique artistic style … How to improve it? With a version that expands this content even further and finally with the demand version with texts in Spanish. Persona 5 Royal will be the gateway to this saga for many new players, now that the language barrier no longer exists. More than 150 hours of high quality Japanese role-playing, now the challenge is to be able to dedicate them.

6. Ori and the Will of the Wisps

Released: March 11, 2020

Moon Studios has become in its own right one of the star studios within the Microsoft Studios umbrella and it has done so thanks to its mastery of the platforms genre, thanks to Ori. The sequel Ori and the Will of the Wisps is a superb audiovisual experience for the player, with brilliant ideas and an even more refined gameplay. The game outperforms the original installment with a more extensive and risky adventure; not let you fool is one of the references of the genre in this generation that is already ending.

5. DOOM Eternal

Released:  March 20, 2020

DOOM Eternal Analysis

If you grew up in the 90s with a clean shot enjoying the beginnings of the shooter genre on your PC, DOOM Eternal is surely the most satisfying thing you are going to play in 2020. It is difficult to reach the level of balance that id Software has achieved with this new installment that takes the city playable formula of DOOM (2016) one step further, with a game full of action and tension, a remarkable story and a better level design. 2020 gives us one of the best science fiction shooters of the last decade.

4. Animal Crossing New Horizons

Released: March 20, 2020

Animal Crossing New Horizons Analysis

Nintendo is perhaps one of the biggest video game companies hit the hardest by the 2020 pandemic in terms of development plans and releases; there is an alarming news drought in the near future. However, fortunately, the owners of a Nintendo Switch have received this year one of the best titles in their catalog, the almost perfect Animal Crossing New Horizons, which takes the Nintendo saga to another level and is full of content. Spending dozens of hours shaping our island has been one of the best experiences of the year and it has made us somewhat more bearable to be locked up at home for so long.

3. Final Fantasy VII Remake

Released:   April 10, 2020

Final Fantasy VII Remake Review

Final Fantasy VII Remake is not perfect as a video game, but if there is something to be recognized it is that it has managed to agree with practically all fans of the original game: it has met expectations. This is not saying little if we talk about a game idealized by millions of players, but the truth is that Square Enix has treated it with the utmost care and detail, exploiting many situations that the 1997 game tiptoed over. Never before have had we felt Midgar like in this remake, which lays a strong foundation for the next chapters.

2. Half-Life: Alyx

Released: March 23, 2020

Almost 15 years after the last Half-Life, Valve has revolutionized virtual reality video games in 2020 with a revolutionary title that amply fulfills what we would expect from a whole Half-Life 3. The result is spectacular; not the most optimistic could have expected such an innovative game. The big problem, the huge wall that has to be scaled in order to play this Half-Life: Alyx (exclusive to virtual reality), since it requires a high-performance equipment, and of course, an AR device.

1. The Last of Us Part II

Released: June 12, 2020

Analysis the Last of Us Part 2

At the moment for us there are not many doubts, The Last of Us Part 2 is the best 2020 has given by far. It is the most risky big blockbuster we have played in many years and marks a whole path to follow at the narrative and script level in the video game sector. Naughty Dog has raised the bar by several inches on how a video game story should be written, now the ball is on the roof of other major studios.

The great games to come

These are the best Nintendo Switch games to date

2020 still has a lot of rope left; from here we list the most anticipated games of what remains of the year. This does not mean that they automatically become part of our list; we will first have to analyze them and decide if they deserve to sneak into our top 10 of 2020 games.

Cyberpunk 2077

Release Date: November 19, 2020

Does Cyberpunk 2077 have the Game of the Year Award in your pocket? Surely The Last of Us Part II has a lot to say about it, but certainly CD Projekt RED is not going to make it easy. New from the creators of The Witcher is surely the most anticipated game of the decade, a first-person role-playing game full of possibilities in a dystopian future. We just can’t wait for November to play it.

Ghost of Tsushima

Release Date: July 17, 2020

An open world game set in feudal samurai Japan? Can we move forward with a katana or in the shadows like a ninja? Give me two. Sucker Punch kicks off the generation with its ambitious adventure, one of the latest PS4 exclusives. In a few days it will be in stores and we will tell you what we found.

Paper Mario: The Origami King

Release Date: July 17, 2020

The same day as Ghost of Tsushima, Nintendo Switch receives its most important exclusive of the summer, the new installment of one of the most classic sagas of the Nintendo desktop. Paper Mario: The Origami King arrives this July with all the charisma of this role-playing and adventure saga that began its journey just 20 years ago on Nintendo 64 and does so with a delivery that continues to risk, as it is the flag in Paper Mario. We can expect much bigger environments to explore, all the usual humor, a lot of platforms or the most original battles.

Marvels avengers

Release Date: September 4, 2020

Marvel’s Avengers is one of the most controversially surrounded games in recent years. Something doesn’t quite fit with its artistic design, nor with the appearance of its characters, its gameplay presents some doubts … However, we must not lose sight of the fact that behind it is the studio responsible for Tomb Raider, Crystal Dynamics and that the game It will have all the possibilities of the Avengers universe. Expectations are very high with such an important license; this next September we will leave doubts.

Assassins Creed Valhalla

Release Date: Fall 2020

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla will be one of the first intergenerational games that we can play this fall; His departure has been confirmed for PC, PS4, Xbox One, PS5 and Xbox Series X. Ubisoft chooses for this installment the Viking theme and as a setting, the British Isles, proposing a rather dark Assassin’s Creed and in line with previous installments (how well they have worked): more role, stealth and character development than parkour and the leaps that defined the saga in its beginnings.

Halo Infinite

Release date: 2020?

Halo is as important to Xbox as Uncharted or The Last of Us for PlayStation and the truth is that the expectations for Infinite, which should arrive from launch with Xbox Series X are huge. The trailers shown so far of the new Master Chief show us the visual potential of the new Microsoft console, however it seems at the moment we do not know much about the new adventure. We will have to endure a few weeks until the expected exclusive gaming event in July organized by Microsoft to know many more details, such as whether it will finally arrive in 2020.

Marvels Spider-Man Miles Morales

Release Date: Fall 2020

PlayStation 5 will debut at the end of the year with this kind of spin off of the magnificent Spider-Man of 2018 that so many PS4 has sold. The best spider-man game to date will have its particular “Uncharted: The Lost Legacy”; In other words, a game starring Miles Morales that will further exploit the Spider-Man engine thanks to the capabilities of PS5, but that will not be a sequel as such.
